Verity by Colleen Hoover Book Review:
Verity by Colleen Hoover came as a surprise to me. I read it as soon as it released and on a high from reading her amazing romances, “It Ends With Us“, I was totally unprepared for this gritty Adult Romantic Thriller. Lowen is struggling financially and so, when she gets an opportunity of a lifetime to write for Bestselling Author Verity Crawford, she is thrilled. But as she spends days at Verity’s home and things unveil, the readers are in for the shock of their lives!
People like me belong in overpopulated cities. The state of my life is irrelevant in a place this size. There are far more people here with stories much more pitiful than mine. Here, I’m invisible. Unimportant. Manhattan is too crowded to give a shit about me, and I love her for it.”

Things I loved:
The high point of this book is the character study. The author shows the murky depths of human character in this book. Given the right motivation, anyone is capable of anything is what is shown in Verity.
Most people come to New York to be discovered. The rest of us come here to hide.”
Verity by Colleen Hoover Book Quote
Colleen Hoover had me feeling sorry for Lowen for her dire financial situation, for Verity who is paralysed and wholly dependent on others for even the basic daily activities, and Jeremy who is so heartbroken over his wife’s injury but so devoted to her.
This quote from the scene when Lowen and Jeremy meet as strangers struck a cord with me.
He leans against the counter like this is a conversation he’s ready for. A conversation he’s been waiting for. Someone to come along and make his tragedies seem less tragic. It’s what you do when you’ve experienced the worst of the worst. You seek out people like you…people worse off than you…and you use them to make yourself feel better about the terrible things that have happened to you.”
Verity Book Quote
But then as the story progressed, the characters started revealing hidden depths like an onion. To say I was shocked and left with my mouth hanging open is an understatement!
The world building is splendid and the whole eerie, atmospheric feel of danger, hidden secrets, and impending doom, had me intrigued right from the start.
Some families are lucky enough to never experience a single tragedy. But then there are those families that seem to have tragedies waiting on the back burner. What can go wrong, goes wrong. And then gets worse.”
Verity by Colleen Hoover Book Quote
Then there are scenes featuring Verity that had me jumping in fright and checking over my shoulder.
I’m not going back up there again. I’m scaring myself. The most helpless person in this house is the one I’m the most afraid of.”
Verity Book Quote
This is a story unlike any I have read and it is executed beautifully. I sat glued until the very end and then was left on a book hangover like no other!
Things that left me feeling conflicted:
While I enjoyed Verity, there are a few things that left me feeling down. Firstly, the sex scenes. After a while I started feeling like I was reading erotica. The explicitness could have been tempered down and the story would still move forward. Secondly, I have to say that there are no heroes or villains in this book. Every character is grey and while I loved this, the ending still left me morally conflicted. The end message that people get away doing bad things is something I didn’t want to live because unlike reality where this so often happens, I want to see goodness win in books.
If I’m capable of doing something that disturbing, what else am I capable of?”
Verity Book Quote
Conclusion:
…things lurking around inside the mind can be just as dangerous as tangible threats.”
Verity Book Quote
Overall, Verity by Colleen Hoover is decidedly dark, creepy, grey, shocking and unputdownable. There are many triggers in this book like self-harm, parental abuse, gaslighting, psychological manipulation etc. People here do very bad things and even get away with it. There is obsession like you haven’t seen before, a cruelty that besmirches loved relationships, and morally conflicting actions that will have you feeling ill at ease. So, this book is not for everyone. If you are okay with reading stories with heavy sex scenes, morally corrupt characters, obsessed characters willing to do anything to satisfy their obsession, and an ending that will leave you conflicted then Verity is for you. Njkinny recommends this one of a kind romantic thriller to readers above the age of eighteen. 4.5 out of 5 stars to it.
