These Old Shades by Georgette Heyer Book Summary:
Duke of Avon is called “Satanas” (Satan) by society for his debauched ways, omniscience and cold manner. One day he saves a young boy from harm. And so starts this thrilling story of mystique, revenge, love with the opulence of France and England as the settings with juicy gossip and haughty Lords and simpering Ladies making life seem shallow err more interesting.
Our heroine, Leonie has seen too much of the dark side of human nature for someone just nineteen years old. So, more interested in dressing as a boy than being a Lady, she has given her unconditional loyalty and love to the Duke of Avon.
These Old Shades by Georgette Heyer Book Review:
A book that launched the career of Bestselling Author Geogette Heyer, this classic romance is the perfect example of fabulous writing, expert charactisation, and storytelling where the author doesn’t tell much but still shows it all!
Justin, Duke of Avon is shown as a man of loose morals and debauched ways but all through the book he is witty, ironic and a perfect gentleman. He dresses funny in high heeled shows, bright colours and shocks everyone by carrying a fan and still his masculinity is never in doubt. He is virile, handsome, enigmatic, and a closed book. The author doesn’t have to show bedroom scenes or his conquests to convince the readers.
His transformation from a cold hearted man to a man who loves deeply is splendidly done.
Leonie is hinted at being abused, harassed and put in danger but the author doesn’t have to tell everything. Her subtle showing forms a picture in the readers’ minds.
Poor hero tries so hard to make a sacrifice for his beloved and discourage the heroine but…
'Child, you do not know me. You have created a mythical being... It is not I.' 'you need not have told me this! I know-and still I love you. I do not want a boy. I only want Monseigneur.'- #BookQuote These Old Shades by Georgette Heyer… Share on X
This quote had me smiling so wide and applauding the heroine. Isn’t it better being the last woman a man loves than the first?!
'Léonie, you will do well to consider. You are not the first woman in my life.' 'Monseigneur, I would so much rather be the last woman than the first'- #BookQuote These Old Shades by Georgette Heyer #BookReview on #NjkinnysBlog… Share on X
Then the saying of “revenge is a dish best served cold” is beautifully shown here. Justin waits twenty years to take revenge and what a revenge it is!
Conclusion:
So, a book that shocked me, hooked me, and even made me cringe a bit at places but nevertheless left me hugely impressed and in love, Njkinny Recommends this Classic book, THESE OLD SHADES to all classic book lovers as well as readers looking for a well-written story.
