The Bride Test by Helen Hoang Book Summary:
A young Vietnamese woman gets an unexpected and unusual offer to travel to America which she accepts hoping to find a better life there.
Esme Tran works as a maid in a posh hotel in Ho Chi Minh City. Poor, weary with all the hard work that still isn’t enough to cover their basic needs, her life takes a turn when a chance meeting with a rich woman lands her the unusual offer of travelling to America to meet her son and see if they match.
…she wanted to do nothing for a few moments. Just nothing. Nothing was such a luxury.”

You have to play to win, even if you’re not sure you want him. As long as he is not evil, love can grow. And remember, good girls don’t get the man. You need to be bad…”

Khai has felt different all his life. He is autistic, unable to process emotions like other people and so, in his opinion, not relationship material. Give him numbers and he is right at home but give him emotions and he is like a drowning ship with no land in sight. When he comes to know of his mother’s matchmaking effort, he is angry but reluctantly agrees to host Esme. What starts as a reluctant meeting, soon turns into something so beautiful that it will change their lives forever.
Nothing gets to you. It’s like your heart is made of stone.”

The Bride Test by Helen Hoang Book Review:
Things I loved about this book:
I cried, laughed, sighed and felt so raw as I read this heartfelt story of struggles, determination, redemption, and love. Esme’s insecurities about being uneducated, a maid, a single mother, poor, and unexperienced in the art of seduction. Her desperation to provide a comfortable life to her family, her fumbling and yet daring efforts to seduce Khai, and her fear of losing this chance at a better life, will touch your heart and make you shed many a tear.
He was strange and tactless and very possibly an assassin, but when she looked at his actions, all she saw was kindness.

Characters:
I loved Esme’s strength, her patience, her love for her daughter, and her growth in the book. The woman she becomes by the end will have you cheering and saluting her!
Khai’s insecurities about rejection in relationships, his fear of not understanding people’s emotions correctly, and his pathos about being different, less than others will break your heart. Another insight into the struggles of Autistic people, I applaud the author for bringing another realistic and memorable character in this book. I absolutely loved Stella from The Kiss Quotient who was also Autistic but quite different to Khai. However, their struggles to blend in society are the same.
They all knew he wanted to be alone. Except it wasn’t always that way. Sometimes he was alone out of habit. Sometimes it took effort to distract himself from the growing emptiness inside.”

Plot:
The plot is well planned, crisply executed and narrated so vividly that everything looks like a technicolour movie. I sat glued throughout and at the end was left with a wide smile on my face, wanting more!
The author brings to life their misunderstandings, struggles to connect, and pathos with so much poise, humour, and elegance. You will connect with all shades of the protagonists be it their awkward sexual encounters, their insecurities, their emotional plays, and their budding love that silently creeps on them leading to an ending that had me clapping and jumping in joy!
She couldn’t cry. She was supposed to be happy for the both of them because he didn’t know how.”

Quan was another character that won my heart and I am so eager to read Khai’s elder brother’s, Quan’s story in “The Heart Principle”. We meet Michael and Stella from “The Kiss Quotient” again in this book but still, it is not necessary to read the books in order. They can be read as standalone stories.
Things I didn’t like in the book:
I loved everything about this book.
Conclusion:
All in all, The Bride Test by Helen Hoang is another unique, stellar, enchanting and total must-read book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It is so much more than a romance. This book inspires, motivates, teaches, and reignites faith in love and life. Njkinny recommends this soulful story to everyone. 5 out of 5 super shiny stars to it. Go read Helen Hoang books because this author’s books are not-to-be-missed!
