Ruin by Aarti V Raman Book Review:
Ruin by Aarti V Raman is the second book in “Bastard Billionaires” series but still can be read as a standalone. It also is connected to another of Aarti V Raman’s books called “To Love Honor and Defy” and while a separate story, I still recommend that readers read “To Love Honor and Defy” first before reading this one to understand the back story better.
I met Lena in “The Soldier Prince“/”To Love Honor and Defy” for the first time and was so intrigued by her character. Fiery, stubborn, highly intelligent and yet tormented by a past incident, she fakes a bubbly, airhead, party princess persona while inside she is broken and yearns for peace and acceptance. One of the three Stellengard Royal siblings, she is expected to be a perfect Princess. But someone is targeting the Royal family and has lena in their sights.
Shane Mc Rae is ex-military, a trained assassin and Lena’s elder brother’s best friend. Tortured by his past dark actions and the guilt that accompanies them, he is a man on the brink of darkness. For a short period in his life, he loved and was at peace but then like everything good in his life, he had to break the heart of the only woman he ever loved, Lena.
The story goes back and forth in time to take the readers through Shane and Lena’s life and their history as lovers now turned enemies. Lena hates Shane for what he did and herself for letting him to do it. Shane hates himself for how he broke her heart and the lies he told. Now someone is posing a danger to her life and Shane is determined to keep her safe even if it means facing her hatred and disdain.
Things I liked:
I loved meeting Prince Alexander, the second Stellangard royal and Lena’s elder brother and Sascha from “The Soldier Prince“/”To Love Honor and Defy” as well as Royal Heir Prince Michael and his wife Daria. The Stallangard Royals have intrigued me so much and I adored Prince Alexander and it was such a pleasure to meet these beloved characters again. Now I wait eagerly to read Michael and Daria’s story and hope we get it soon.
Lena and Shane’s past had me going misty eyed, and their yearning for each other had my heart breaking, These are tortured characters and each emotion they feel is acutely felt by the readers, all thanks to Aarti V Raman’s captivating narration. The world building is immersive and the story sucked me in right from the start. Everything felt so real that you won’t be able to keep the book down until the end.
Old and new characters, both primary and secondary are given the required page space to take the story forward. I am so eager to see the many stories brewing in this book come to fruition soon.
The romance is intense albeit a slow burn. It is hot, angsty, dark and soul searing. I loved how it took the protagonists on a path of forgiveness, redemption, and a happily-ever-after that will have you sighing in pure bliss!
The suspense is thrilling but it is the romance that takes the main seat. There is danger, hidden motives, and a long game plan that still not clear. So, I sat intrigued throughout wanting to know who and what was after Lena. The mystery is carried over from “The Soldier Prince“/”To Love Honor and Defy“.
Things that could be better:
This is a lengthy book of more than 500 pages. So, while engaging throughout, I felt that it could have been shorter.
The back and forth in the story is sometimes confusing.
I loved Shane and hated his mother for her indifference. So, all the while I wanted to see a closure or showdown with her.
The ending looked a little rushed and so, while I loved the closure, I was left wanting to know more. Also I wanted to know what happened to one the guards in this book I have come to love and hope we get her story too!
