Profana’s Faceless by Mason S. Haynie Book Review:
I read and enjoyed Mason S Haynie’s debut book “Ecclesia’s Table”. So, when I heard that he had expanded his Ecclesia Dystopian world in another book, I jumped to read “Profana’s Faceless“.
We again meet Amaru, Reenu, Moshe, and several other characters from the previous book, and it was interesting to see their lives now as they face new challenges. The author has built a bleaker and more dingy world in this book. While Ecclesia lost its power yet the world is still harsh, dangerous, and challenging for the survivors. There is water shortage, food scarcity, and dangers from unknown foes both internal and external. The people are still reeling and looking forward to a leader to lead them to a better life.

Things I liked:
I loved how the author showcased human character as it is influenced by the surroundings as well as their situation. Loyalties are tested, new relationships are formed while old companions find a different path in life. I was also very intrigued by the “polyamorous” relationship theme the author used in this book.
This book builds a dystopian world that, sometimes, seems a frightening possibility in the future. He showed all kinds of shades to humans from devoted leaders to blind followers to self-interested members to familial-obligation driven characters. Also after so much strife, there is a general distrust of the world among the people. There is no clear future for them and each day is a struggle. I liked how the author worked to bring to life a complex world that has a presence of its own.
Another thing that I applaud the author for is the diverse number of characters he created and balanced with expertise. There are so many characters introduced all through the book and each one is different from the other.
Can this book be read as a standalone?
Also while this book is self-contained, still I feel it will be best enjoyed if the readers read “Ecclesia’s Table” first before reading this one. This is so because the world is the same and the stories are interconnected. Even the characters overlap in both the books. Also all through this book, events that happen are consequence of the happenings of the previous book. So, to fully appreciate the whole experience, I recommend reading the books in order.
Conclusion:
All in all, Profana’s Faceless by Mason S. Haynie is a dystopian fiction that will suck you in and take you on an adventure that is full of thrill, action, danger, and test your survival instincts. Mason S. Haynie is a talented writer who has so much potential and I look forward to reading more from him in the future. With the way this book ended and also a few happenings that had no closure, I am hoping for a next instalment to this post-apocalyptic world. I want to meet my favourite characters again and am eager to see how the Profanas fare in the future.
