Parenting Strategies Unplugged by Shibu Nair Book Review:

A book that came as a godsend to me, it not only enlightened me to several mistakes I was subconsciously making but also helped me gain a positive solution to the challenges I was facing as a parent. As you already know, I read Shibu Nair’s previous book “Why Should I Worry When I can face the World?” and absolutely adored it. It is a book that gives real life practical tips to overcome depression, anxiety, and daily challenges we face each day. So, when I picked Parenting Strategies Unplugged by Shibu Nair to read, I had high expectations from this book and it totally lived up to my expectations!

Books that are relatable, and that actually provide practical tips to tackle real life problems, and situations are rare, and must reads for everyone. And Shibu Nair’s books fall in this category. They are not only well-researched but also offer real life scenarios that will resonate with readers, and provide solutions that have actually worked in reality!

Things I liked:

The book is divided in chapters with each chapter dedicated to different scenarios dealing with a distinct challenge children face in their everyday life. These scenarios that are like case studies based on the vast experience of the author as a teacher struck so close to home for me. As a parent, I have faced several of these challenges with my preteen son. Right from the challenge of sensitively handling his mental health to curbing his screen time to helping him find his interests without making him feel pressured are all problems that all parents as well as adults with kids in their families face.

What sets this book apart is the practical nature of the solutions. The author doesn’t preach but showcases how he handled different cases with his students of varied age groups. All through the book, the language is simple, easy to understand, and conversational so it felt like listening to a respected elder share his wisdom and experience with me.

This is a quote that every parent, teacher, and adult should take note of when guiding children towards a better future.

Dev’s story serves as a reminder that success isn’t just about grades, but about self-belief and hard work. It shows that making it big isn’t all about your report card; it’s about having faith in yourself and putting in the effort. It’s about figuring out what you’re good at and what you love and then linking that to the right courses and a matching career.”

This is yet another important reminder.

our children are not defined by their grades or achievements alone , but by the love and support we provide them with.”

The below quote was another great reminder. We are often in a dilemma when dealing with our kids. Should we be strict? Should we give in to their demands? Would being too strict drive a wall between us? We want to be strict but also be someone our kids confide in and trust. So, the case study in chapter 3 that talks about “Modern Parenting Approaches” resonated with me so much.

At the end of the day, being a good parent is all about finding that sweet spot between being loving and firm, setting boundaries and expectations and letting your kids know that you’re always there for them no matter what.”

After reading this book, readers will realise that many of our actions whether deliberate or not affect our kids negatively, hampering their self-confidence and fighting spirit. We often compare our children with other children or look down upon their unconventional interests only because they don’t conform to societal expectations and norms. The author beautifully showcases how such actions can demoralise children.

So, this quote is something we all should remember when interacting with children. After all, we are their best cheerleaders!

It is imperative for parents to actively affirm their children’s capabilities, identifying and appreciating their unique qualities. By instilling in children a sense of equal competence and self-worth, parents can promote a healthy, positive mindset.”
