The Lost Expedition by Douglas Misquita Book Review:
If you are looking for an action-packed, edgy, race against time chase with lost treasures, dangerous International criminals, global scale locations, and an honourable daring hero then The Lost Expedition by Douglas Misquita is for you.
One of the most talented and yet criminally underrated authors, Douglas Misquita’s books are well researched, plot driven with complex multi-layered characters, and guaranteed adrenaline rush. I have been following his works and so had high expectations with this latest book too. After reading this book, I am so happy that this one is yet another engrossing adventure that will keep you hooked throughout!
Things I liked:
Book Cover, Title and Blurb:
The Cover art is eye catching and in my opinion, the best cover of all the author’s works so far. Then the book title had me intrigued instantly. The blurb is interesting but I felt that it could be made more interesting to attract new readers.
Plot and World Building:
This book has a multilayered plot that perfectly blends current world politics, history, and myths to give a fictional story that unique and riveting. Then the world building is immersive and had me effortlessly sucked in. I travelled across the globe and felt each change in terrain as if I was actually there. The urgency of completing the mission before it’s too late, and the goosebump inducing sense of impending doom is so well captured by the author. Everything felt real and had a vivid cinematic quality to it.
Writing style:
Douglas Misquita’s writing is fluid with no frills. He does his homework and is world wise which shows in his writing. He is able to efficiently capture the emotions of each scene. So, readers will connect with the story and feel one with the happenings in the story.
I love how he intelligently incorporates International locations, criminals, and law enforcement on a huge global scale. These are cases that impact not one country but the world. And these are criminals wanted by several countries. So, it is exciting to see how law enforcement agencies of different countries work and how police cooperate across borders especially Interpol like agency.
Characters:
With a varied cast of characters, it would seem difficult to follow the story. But the author made each character whether primary or supporting stand out with his own story that created a vivid mental image for them in my mind. This again is the sign of a talented writer and I applaud Douglas Misquita on making this possible. I could easily connect with the main hero Izak Kaurben, Chief Inspector Goran from Croatia, Ivan Drago (a former colonel of Yugoslav Wars) , Cheick Ndiaye (Captain of fishing trawler Abhita) and more.
There are many characters that have been carried forward from the previous book “Relic“. So, Njkinny recommends that you read that book too to understand and enjoy this book better.
Pace of the story and additional inclusions that add to the interest in the story.
This book is divided into eight parts and at the start of each part we get a list of characters with their introductions that will feature in that part. This makes it easier to recognise and relate to the characters and story.
Then the author has also included indepth maps at various points in the story that further enhanced my understanding and engagement in the action. He has also included historical pictures that made the treasure hunt more exciting.
The story moves at changing pace based on the demand of the plot. So, each part of the story has a different pacing and it felt like being an action adventure movie all through.
Then the author has also provided a “references” section where the readers can learn more about the locations, history, legends, maps etc. used in this book.
Conclusion:
All in all, The Lost Expedition by Douglas Misquita is a thrilling, engrossing and captivating story that held my interest all through. It is an intelligent piece of writing that not only entertained me but also enhanced my understanding of World politics, history, and gave me a better understanding of the lives of people from different countries.
So, a book that reads like a Hollywood style action adventure thriller movie and so is perfect to be adapted for Television, I give The Lost Expedition by Douglas Misquita 4.5 out of 5 stars. Njkinny recommends this book to all action adventure lovers looking for a thrilling story that mixes high octane action, danger, and a treasure hunt that has the potential to rewrite history.
