Dial A For Aunties by Jesse Q Sutanto Book Review:
I got attracted towards Dial A For Aunties by Jesse Q Sutanto because of the intriguing title and the blurb that promised a cozy mystery type story. But boy was I wrong! This book is a mishmash of comedy, soap opera style scenarios, a humorous commentary on Asian culture, light hearted mystery, romance, and family dramatics.
Things I liked:
Right from the start, I was hooked and I loved this fun read. There are melodramatic aunties who are judgemental and yet at the end of the day willing to do anything for family even help hide a dead body! Then there is Meddelin who is a dutiful daughter who feels duty bound to stay close to her mother even if it means leaving behind her own dreams. But who, at the end, realises that being with family does not mean sacrificing your own happiness.
"My eyes fill with tears. All these years, I have never seen it that way, but Ma’s right. I did grow up with four mothers, and it really has been amazing. There’s been so much love in my life that I took for granted.”- #BookQuote… Share on XMy eyes fill with tears. All these years, I have never seen it that way, but Ma’s right. The scenarios, characters, and the plot is soap opera style drama with over the top emotional play, a healthy dose of melodrama, stereotype Asian characters, and a mystery that funny and light hearted.

Things that could have been better:
The narration could have been tighter. For now, the pace of the story drags in places and the story rambles round and round.
Then there is the romance aspect of the story. It is almost like an after thought.
The characterisation could have been more realistic. Almost all characters are stereotypes and that too in their most unrealistic forms. The aunties act so childish at places that it was painful to read about it. Even the hero is almost a caricature of a perfect boyfriend with no depth and character development. I expected some clash, heartache, soul-to-soul when they met again but he acts like a love sick puppy and follows her around. So artificial and even though I loved the happy ending for Meddelin, I was disappointed by the characters who has so much potential.
Conclusion:
All in all, Dial A For Aunties by Jesse Q Sutanto is a light, fun and breezy mystery with lots of drama. But to enjoy it fully, you will need to suspend your practical mind and leave it behind and just go with the flow. A laughter riot, this book is over-the-top dramatic and if you are looking for a crazy, humorous read that takes you away from reality then this is it. So, 4 out of 5 stars to it just because I enjoyed it and it made me laugh. Njkinny recommends this debut book to all readers looking for a hilarious and entertaining read where thinking too much is not allowed.
