Book Review:
Between You and Me by Susan Wiggs attracted me because of the cover and ofcourse, the author’s name. The blurb again is intriguing and had me eager to start reading this book.
Now after having read it three times, I am still as enamored by it as I slowly became when I read it the first time. Undoubtedly one of the best books of 2018 and my favourite, Between You and Me is a book that will always have a special place in my heart and my bookshelf.
A book that expertly tackles the fragile balance of love, responsibility, faith and the inner turmoil of doing the right thing without compromising one’s traditions, this book had me seated at the edge of my seat throughout, swiftly turning pages until the very end.
I skipped all work while I read this book and then felt the need to discuss this book with any and everyone near me.
A perfect book for Book club discussions, Susan Wiggs’ expert narration and brutally honest characterization will have you feeling invested in the story and the characters. Miss Wiggs’ prowess as a written is showcased in her beautiful handling of both the Amish and non-Amish world with their own pros and cons without taking sides. She shows the beauty and ugliness of both without sounding biased.
Caleb is a such a strong hero and one of my favourite heroes of all time. He is caught between two worlds. His loved one needs the help of the latest technology but this goes against his Amish beliefs and the promise he made a long time ago. How he balances everything and the sacrifices he makes had me loving him more and rooting for a happy ending for him.
Reese is a modern woman and her sincerity and dedication to help people had me respecting her. Her helplessness and anger watching the injustice done to people she loves all in name of tradition is all too real and everyone will relate to it. The love between her and Caleb is so pure that it strikes a cord within us with its earnestness. This is a romance that is silent, has no impulsive overturns but its impact is no less albeit more on the reader.
The other characters in this book are as strong and memorable as the protagonists and will leave a lasting impression on the readers’ minds.
All in all, Between You and Me by Susan Wiggs is a book that is not to be kept between you and me and should be read by everyone and shared with everyone. One of the very best books of 2018 and probably of all time for me, I absolutely adored this book that left me gasping in pain, feeling helpless in the face of societal cruelty and then empowered when faced with love so strong and pure that it withstands all challenges to finally come out the winner!
Do yourself a favour and go read this book. A perfect gift and a book that challenges us both intellectually as well as emotionally, I give this enchanting book 5 super shiny stars and Njkinny strongly recommends this book to everyone.
I received an ARC from the publishers via Edelweiss and I am very thankful to them. The above is my honest and unbiased review and in no way influenced.
