Legacy by Nora Roberts Book Review:

Lagacy by Nora Roberts Book Summary:

I am a huge fan of Nora Roberts and as soon as I heard that she had a new book out, I didn’t wait a second before I bought myself a copy!

Legacy by Nora Roberts is the story surrounding the Risso family, especially the mother-daughter duo of Lina and Adrian Risso. Adrian Risso was eight years old when her biological father attacked her and her mother, almost killing her but who died instead in the scuffle. With an ambitious, self made fitness Influencer mother, Adrian has been shuffled place to place based on her mother’s busy schedule. The only place of permanence has been her grandparents’ house in a small town called Traveller’s Creek where the Risso’s Italian Restaurant has stood like an institution for two generations.

As ambitious and determined to make her own name as her mother, Adrian starts her own fitness business at seventeen but her life takes a turn when she starts receiving threatening poems from a mysterious someone. With no clues, these poems become a fixture in her life coming every year but life goes on and years pass without any closure. Spanning decades, this book starts when Adrian is eight and ends when she is almost thirty.

Book Review: Legacy by Nora Roberts

Characteristic of Nora Roberts’ past family-centric stories, this one, too, introduces the readers to a host of characters who all grow as the story progresses. I loved meeting Adrian and her family, her friends, and even the stalker who is twisted and convinced of the righteousness of his actions.

The story flows like gentle waves with no sudden disturbances. The most shock you get is in the initial scene with Adrian’s biological father. Even the characters, while lovable, are so poised throughout that at one point, I wanted to shake them just to see a crack in their composure!

So much is happening with Adrian but she has no emotional outbursts, no passionate episodes of fear, anger and uncertainty. She stays focused, continues with her life unafraid. I know these are great qualities but it got unnatural when not once was she shown as afraid, angry, or in any heightened state of emotion other than her quiet, ambitious self.

Things I liked:

The people I liked the best in this book were Adrian’s grand parents who reminded me of my own grand parents with their abiding love for each other, their patience, understanding and unfailing support to Adrian and Lina, and their love of community. Well respected and loved by all, they present life goals for everyone.

The other characters get their stories too and I sat glued as I followed the characters on their life journeys. This is a lengthy book and can be easily read in parts in multiple sessions.

The romance isn’t a big part of the book. There is no build up to it and except one or two scenes, it is like a slow drifting of two people closer and agreeing that they suit and are in love. OMG! I was so let down here. I loved Raylan though. He had so much potential and so much passion that we see in his marriage but the romance with Adrian is so business like and passionless. His story, apart from the romance with Adrian, is much more engaging and inspiring.

The suspense also starts almost after half the story is over and there are no twists and turns. The reader knows who the stalker is and yes, he is after Adrian. Even the final face down was meh. No excitement.

Conclusion:

All in all, I think this book is not essentially a romantic suspense but a family saga where the main emphasis is on the development of the characters’ journeys through a span of time. While I loved getting to know the characters and their connections with each other and watching them grow, I was not amused by the staid emotional portrayals. With this much danger and past trauma in the picture, I wanted passion, emotion, and an exciting showdown.

3.5 out of 5 stars to it just because I got invested in the lives of the people in this book and felt their loss when the story ended. Otherwise this story is too lengthy with no justifiable recommendation to say that it is a romantic suspense. Give it a try if you love reading family sagas and are a die-hard Nora Roberts fan.
