Book Summary:
Ecclesia’s Table by Mason S. Haynie is his debut novel that takes the readers to a dystopian world where the land has turned barren, where life is tough, challenging and a daily struggle. Three friends set out to find the fabled heaven “Ecclesia” where land is rich and life prosperous and happy. Moshe, Amaru and Reenu have only endured the hard life of the desert but when they hear about a land of plenty, they journey to find this place called Ecclesia. The journey is harsh and dangerous but everything is worth it when they finally make to the fabled heaven. Ecclesia is everything heavenly from the outside but not everything is as it seems. Inside life is a fight and to live here means to earn a place for yourself through fierce competition, and severe scrutiny. Soon, Moshe, Amaru and Reenu are caught in the politics of the place and when danger arises, will they rise up to the challenge?

Ecclesia’s Table by Mason S. Haynie Book Review:
I was sucked into the story right from the start. Moshe, Amaru and Reenu’s hope for a better future, their determination to reach this place of abundance, and their strength in the face of adversity had me rooting for them. The world building is beautiful and captivating. I could imagine the wasteland the world has turned to. The contrast between the rich exterior and the poor, rotting interior of Ecclesia is apparent. I could feel the discontent of the Ecclesians who face injustice, heartbreak and poverty but are helpless to do anything. Their despair and acceptance to things had my heart breaking.
The politics of the place will appeal to readers interested in governance and the inner conflicts of the characters add another layer of realism to the story. For a debut, I enjoyed Mason’s writing style and his crisp and honest narration.
While I loved reading this book, there are a few things that I feel can be improved on. Firstly, the world building could be made more detailed. The initial picture is so crisp in a reader’s mind but as the story progressed the world picture was not enhanced with the events. Secondly, at times the dialogues felt unnecessarily long and more telling than showing.
All in all, Ecclesia’s Table by Mason S. Haynie is a dystopia that is distinct and had me transported to a world so different from reality. I sat glued throughout and enjoyed every second spent reading this book. Go read this immersive book with strong characters and a story that will engage you, challenge you, connect with you and then leave you blissfully satisfied!
