Book Review: Caressed by Ice by Nalini Singh
Caressed by Ice by Nalini Singh is the third book in the Psy-Changeling series and definitely one of my absolute favourites. If the first two books in this series were good then this one went a step further in winning me over.
This is the story of a defected Psy, Judd Lauren and a Snow Dancer wolf, Brenna Kincaid who was abducted and tortured by a Psy and although, eventually rescued, is still grappling with the horror of those days.
I really really enjoyed reading this book and was bowled over by the romance, the drama and the danger present in this story.
Nalini Singh has created a complex, ingenious and engrossing futuristic world where there are Psy, cold in their emotions but very strong with their minds; Changelings, who are passionate, ferociously loyal and very close to their emotions; and Humans. The author has expertly managed to develop the fictional world and further engross and intrigue the readers in the latest developments happening and thinking about the repercussions on the lives of their favourite characters in this series!
I have become a big fan of Nalini Singh and she proves her imagination and writing prowess yet again in this book. She brings to us scorching and yet heartfelt passion, very real danger and a crisp and engaging storyline that held me captive until the very end.
The story is fast-paced and well-planned twists are thrown at strategic points in the story. The characterization is realistic and I could empathize with the characters. Brenna had me admiring her grit and strength in overcoming such a horrible experience that is sure to break anyone’s spirit. Judd’s struggle in maintaining his cold, emotionless self despite his yearning for more from his life is very real. I enjoyed following these two around as they bumped around trying to find their final happily-ever-after while facing life-threatening danger from an unknown assailant.
Judd and Brenna’s love is so pure and intense, my heart broke for them and then soared with them. Judd is a hero who seemed so cold to the point of aloofness initially but when he falls for Brenna, we see a man completely and wholeheartedly devoted to his lover, willing to do anything to protect her. His dominance and possessiveness should have been a turnoff but in this case, it suited the story and the romantic chemistry between the protagonists so beautifully that I can’t complain about it. This clearly shows the writing prowess of the author who made a reader like me, who didn’t like paranormal romances or heroes who are possessive, not only like them but also love reading such romances and about such heroes. Kudos to the author. She is a must-read author who has made a place for herself in my list of favourite authors.
‘”I need to ask you something important.”
“What could be more important than your life?” She sounded close to tears.
“Your life. If you die, I don’t know if I’d stay sane.” A simple truth.’
There are intense emotional scenes and equally intimate physical scenes which although very explicit, didn’t make me feel uncomfortable because of the beautiful balance between the physical and emotional aspects of the scenes.
I absolutely loved this book and was left eager to immediately take up the next book to read!
All in all, Caressed by Ice is a beautiful mix of engaging storytelling, well-constructed settings, expertly developed characters and heartfelt emotional play. 5 out of 5 to it from me and Njkinny recommends it to all lovers of paranormal romantic suspense who are above the age of eighteen.
