Book Review:
Above the Bridge is the first book in Deborah Garner’s Paige Mackenzie Mystery series and the first book by the author that I have read.
The cover is beautiful and an expert play at animation but the true meaning of the cover is understood only when you start reading the book. The blurb is interesting and catches a reader’s attention.
The best thing about the story was the beautiful description of the locations which had me visualizing the beauty of the places and wishing of visiting these places someday!
Deborah’s writing style is simple and engaging. She gives a mystery with a romance without using explicit sex scenes and crude language to move her story forward which I liked about her.
I liked Paige but still felt that she was not developed to her full potential. She has everything but still could not get that depth in her character that would have connected me to her. The other characters are also the same including the hero, Jake who is our ideal handsome, determined and strong hero but still something is missing which made all the characters look unreal and had me aware that I was reading a book.
The mystery and romance is good and I liked it but still, I feel that it could have been better. The trip back in time is a real twist and brought back a lot of history and had me visualizing the town as it was hundred years or so ago but at the end of it, I felt as if something was missing. The second trip back definitely didnt fulfill any purpose. Same is with the shine Paige sees when sitting near the bridge, why is she the only one who can see it? What is its purpose? I was left with unanswered questions and felt the ending didn’t bring closure to all the open threads.
All in all, Above the Bridge is a decent book which is a great option when looking for a light read but it could have been better. The plot was very interesting and could have been made into a 5 star book. At the moment, I give it 3.5 stars and wish the author the very best. She is talented and I hope to read more form her in the future.
