Unexpected Gift by Chantel Rhondeau is a story that not only warmed my heart but also reminded me of my favourite fairy tale of Beauty and the Beast.


Part of Christmas Pets and Kisses anthology, this is the story of Cali who is new to New York and feels lonely. A lost cat leads her to Marcus Ritz, a rich recluse and they, soon, strike a friendship except that Marcus is only ready to talk on phone and never agrees to meet in person. As Christmas comes near, Cali’s hope of meeting Marcus face to face also intensifies, if only she can understand the reason why he refuses to come out of his apartment!


Right from the start, I was engaged in the story. I connected with Cali’s home sickness and loneliness and then was intrigued by Marcus, a mysterious recluse who is gruff and yet kind at heart. I enjoyed their interactions and loved following the development of their relationship.


The plot is simple and yet Chantel executes it so beautifully that she managed to touch my heart, made me smile and then left me with the valuable lesson that true love is blind and never affected by looks but is heartfelt.


The author’s writing style is engaging, emotionally rich and had me interested in the story right till the end. I loved meeting Cali, Marcus, Cali’s family and felt like Christmas had already arrived.


All in all, Unexpected Gift by Chantel Rhondeau is a feel good, clean romance that will entertain and leave you feeling the magic of Christmas.Curl up with a hot cup of tea and enjoy this sweet romance! 4.5 out of 5 and recommended to all lovers of romance. Chantel Rhondeau is a talented writer and I look forward to reading more from her in the future.
