Agatha Arch is a successful writer but a woman paralysed by her anxieties in real life. She is afraid of random things like beans and it is almost like she is afraid of everything. Only her husband provides her the needed support and bravery to go about her life. In love with her husband and happy in her marriage, her life changes when she catches him having sex with a dog walker. Heartbroken, shocked, confused, humiliated, and in denial, she is unable to understand how this could happen.
Weren’t they so happy?
Wasn’t he the one who made fun of the dog walker?
When did they meet?
Why did he do this to her and their children?
So when he leaves her for the other woman, Agatha resorts to various antics like spying on them, breaking down, doing embarrassing things she wouldn’t normally do.
Agatha Arch is Afraid of Everything by Kristin Bair Book Review:
Agatha Arch is Afraid of Everything by Kristin Bair is a woman’s struggle to come to terms with her fears, reinvent herself and move on from the infidelity of her husband. A book that is hilarious and heartbreaking in equal measures, this book is unlike any I have read in a long time and a book that will touch a cord with all women.
When I picked this book up to read I expected a light and comic story with a funny and quirky heroine. What I didn’t expect was to meet Agatha, a woman who is sweet, loyal, talented, a good mom, and a good wife. The only things that keep her back from truly shining are her fears for which she sees a psychiatrist. She married for love and if she is sure of one thing in her life then that is her husband’s love for her and vice versa. So can you imagine the shock and betrayal she feels when she catches her husband having sex with another woman in their shed!
What I liked:
Beautiful cover and intriguing title:
The gorgeous cover was the first thing that attracted me and it even made me buy the book! Then the title is another intriguing aspect of this book. It had me stopping to check this book out.
Relatable and real characters:
The most vibrant aspect of this book are the characters. Be it Agatha with her many anxieties or her husband who feels burdened being her support but callously never thinks to talk to his wife about it and just goes about having an affair with no regard for his family, the author brings to the readers characters that are flawed, relatable and people we have met in real life.
I had every sympathy for Agatha, even when she went overboard at times and no sympathy for her cheating husband. All your good qualities are wasted if you can’t be loyal to your partner. If he was unhappy in his marriage he could have talked about it with his wife but instead he kept up appearances and had an affair behind his family’s backs. Then there is the dog walker. Even when she shares her love story with Agatha, I had no sympathy for her. This is a woman who broke a happy family and no amount of attraction or love justifies her actions.
My heart bled for Agatha and her boys. Children are the worst hit when parents separate and when the boys supported their mother, I smiled like a proud mama.
There are other supporting characters who enable and help Agatha in finding her true self. Kristin Bair’s talent in bringing forth a colourful cast of people each with their own life stories and lessons is exemplary. The way she had each character help the other shine and give readers valuable life lessons makes this book a fabulous read that helped me gain clarity on so many things.
Storytelling:
The plot is well planned and executed. Kristin Bair’s writing style is fluid and simple. She easily had me engrossed and kept me on my toes until the end. I loved the world building, the human study, the characters, and the lessons I took away from this book.
Conclusion:
All in all, I absolutely loved and connected with Agatha Arch is Afraid of Everything by Kristin Bair. So, I laughed, cried, raged, and then supported Agatha in her journey to reinvention and empowerment. She symbolised so many women who find themselves lost, afraid, and betrayed in life. This book teaches us to be strong, take charge of our lives, and move on. So, 4 out of 5 super shiny stars to this fabulous and inspiring story and Njkinny recommends it to everyone especially women. Go read and gift this splendid book with a happy ending now!
