Lucky G and the Melancholy Quokka by Amy Wilinski-Lyman Book Review:

Lucky G is a raven who is a doctor and he helps his friends overcome their sadness through talking. When he visits his friend, Drew in Australia, he meets a sad Quokka, Blue. Blue had once been a happy animal but now he feels sad and disinterested in anything. When he asks Lucky G for help, Lucky G tells him that what he is feeling is called Depression and that it is nothing to be ashamed of. Soon, Lucky G and Blue start therapy and it is when Blue opens up and talks with his doctor is when he starts feeling happy again!

A colourful book with vivid illustrations and information about the animals featured in the story, my four year old son enjoyed this book. He was curious about the Quokka since this is an animal we don’t see around us and then he loved Lucky G who is so patient with Blue. His understanding and his sense of ease with which he talks to Blue is so inspiring.

This book is special because it talks about a topic not talked about often. Depression is so common not only in adults but also children. The author shows how to recognize it in our children and then treat it through play therapy. A short yet impactful book, it will be enjoyed by kids and parents alike. The author has also shared resources for help in dealing with Depression.
