A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson Book Review:
This book is unlike any that I have read. The attention to detail, the multi-layered mystery, the in-depth character sketches, sensitive social issues like racism, and the social trial that often happens in cases like these had me sitting enraptured until the end.
A character study:
The author shows how people we think we know can surprise us.
Pippa’s town is small with everyone knowing everyone since like for ever but when a murder happens, it brings with it shocking revelations about families that seemed so ordinary, relationships that seemed picture perfect, and characters that seemed kind and understanding.
Sal Singh’s family is targeted and despite having no proof, they are persecuted socially.
The ugly face of racism, social isolation, destruction of property, and taunts and jeers become their normal routine. Every good gesture, positive achievement, and community bonding is forgotten when a brilliant boy with a bright future ahead of him is accused of a crime, and even without a trial is deemed guilty. I was heartbroken for the family who didn’t even get a chance to mourn their son and faced cruelty at the hands of people who had once been friends. No one believes them and here the author also brings out the somewhat incompetent and biased face of the Police who are all too eager to close the case and blame the Indian boy!

Characters:
Pippa and her family:
I loved Pippa and her family. Through her family, the author brings out the beauty of having love that crosses the boundaries of the colour of the skin. Pippa’s father is black and yet, her family is one that is full of understanding and care for one another. They are jovial. They fight and then make up but are always there for each other.
The giant Nigerian man was quite evidently her stepfather and Joshua her half-brother. But Pip didn’t like using those words, those cold technicalities…Victor and Josh weren’t just three-eighths hers, not just forty per cent her family, they were fully hers. Her dad and her annoying little brother.”

Ravi and the Singh family:
Ravi, Sal’s younger brother, is another beloved character from this book. Though a major character, he mostly stays in the background. And that is a plus because this gives the readers the unbiased investigation that a third party like Pippa does. The friendship between Pippa and Ravi had me feeling so happy and hopeful that despite racism being present in our world, there are still people who stay above the ugliness.
I felt so proud of the Singh family who quietly endured all the cruelty but never resorted to the same lack of compassion that was being shown to them. They had strength of character and it showed in their every act.

Conclusion:
This book is an entertaining experience that is enlightening, eye-opening and totally memorable. I finished this mystery in one sitting and was left smiling. The mystery kept me on my toes throughout with with well-planned twists and turns. Then I happily played detective with Pippa, marking and crossing people from my list, and was pleasantly surprised when the big reveal happened.
So, right from the beautiful cover, intriguing title, and interesting blurb to the enchanting story, this book is a complete package. And Njkinny recommends it to everyone.
