From #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover comes a novel that explores life after tragedy and the enduring spirit of love.
When Leeds meets Layla, he’s convinced he’ll spend the rest of his life with her—until an unexpected attack leaves Layla fighting for her life. After weeks in the hospital, Layla recovers physically, but the emotional and mental scarring has altered the woman Leeds fell in love with. In order to put their relationship back on track, Leeds whisks Layla away to the bed-and-breakfast where they first met. Once they arrive, Layla’s behavior takes a bizarre turn. And that’s just one of many inexplicable occurrences.
Feeling distant from Layla, Leeds soon finds solace in Willow—another guest of the B&B with whom he forms a connection through their shared concerns. As his curiosity for Willow grows, his decision to help her find answers puts him in direct conflict with Layla’s well-being. Leeds soon realizes he has to make a choice because he can’t help both of them. But if he makes the wrong choice, it could be detrimental for all of them.
Layla by Colleen Hoover Book Summary:
Layla by Colleen Hoover was one of the anticipated books of 2020 for me and I jumped to read it as soon as it released. This is the author’s first foray into the paranormal romance genre and she brings to life a bass player who aspires to become a singer but isn’t ambitious enough, and a woman who believes in living to the fullest. Complete opposites, the attraction between them is there right from the start and for Leeds, Layla is the woman of his dreams. After their initial meeting, they quickly move together and life is perfect but one encounter with Leed’s jealous ex, leaves their happy world shattered.
Layla barely survives and now faces panic attacks with memory gaps. Leeds overcompensates due to guilt and their relationship is suffering. Hoping to rekindle and bring their love back on track, he takes Layla to the place where they first met. But with her indifference and the many ghostly unexplained occurrences happening in the house, he is at his wit’s end.
Layla by Colleen Hoover Book Review:
The story had me hooked right from the start and I was shocked reading the first sentence of the story! However, as the story progressed, it lost a bit of its initial sparkle for me. While I was spooked at multiple places and intrigued, my main disconnect was with Leeds. He started off as the devoted lover and then with Layla’s changed circumstances, his role was changed from the carefree, aimless man to a caregiver, and his feelings started changing. His behaviour with Layla had me questioning his devotion and commitment towards her.

Layla by Colleen Hoover Quotes
I didn’t like the main hero and didn’t condone his actions, however justified they may seem especially cheating. I can’t give away much because this will spoil the fun. You have to read the book to understand what I am saying. Overall it is a brave effort and engaging in parts but not her best work. I lost interest at places but persevered because I wanted to know the why behind the paranormal occurrences around the house. The ending is a happy one but with many loose ends and I was left with many questions and mixed feelings about Layla and Leeds. However the protagonists get their happily-ever-after.
3.5 out of 5 stars is what I rate Layla by Colleen Hoover.
The highlight of the book is the smartly planned events that will have chills racing down your spine and goosebumps jumping on the back of your neck. The writing is top notch, as befitting CoHo. I look forward to reading more from the author in the future.
