Making Faces by Amy Harmon Blurb:
Ambrose Young was beautiful. He was tall and muscular, with hair that touched his shoulders and eyes that burned right through you. The kind of beautiful that graced the covers of romance novels, and Fern Taylor would know. She’d been reading them since she was thirteen. But maybe because he was so beautiful he was never someone Fern thought she could have . . . until he wasn’t beautiful anymore. Making Faces is the story of a small town where five young men go off to war, and only one comes back. It is the story of loss. Collective loss, individual loss, loss of beauty, loss of life, loss of identity. It is the tale of one girl’s love for a broken boy and a wounded warrior’s love for an unremarkable girl. This is a story of friendship that overcomes heartache, heroism that defies the common definitions, and a modern tale of Beauty and the Beast, where we discover that there is a little beauty and a little beast in all of us.
Making Faces by Amy Harmon Book Review
Making Faces by Amy Harmon came to me highly recommended and was the first book by Amy Harmon that I read. I read it back in late 2013 and this hauntingly enchanting story has stayed with me ever since.
I was swept off my feet and my mind blown. The intensity of emotions that this book had me feeling were something that took me by surprise.
Right from the start I was intrigued by the title that was unconventional to say the least and the blurb that promised a story that would stay in a reader’s heart for a long, long time.

Characterisation:
I loved Fern:
Fern has been in love with Ambrose but could never tell him. Then when he leaves for war, she promises herself that she will tell him her true feelings when he returns. But events don’t favour her and when Ambrose returns, it is amidst grief, shock and guilt.
I loved Fern and connected with her. She is a strong character with a positive outlook to life and a fighter spirit. Then her caring nature and her kindness had me falling in love with her. Also her love for books is another positive in her favour!

Quotes from Making Faces by Amy Harmon
Ambrose is one of my all time favourite book heroes:
Ambrose is that perfect character who has everything shiny from his hair to his looks in his life. But who hasn’t lost the shine of his heart. So, a fighter with a heart of gold, he is everything swoon-worthy and loveable. Then his friendship with his four friends- Jesse, Beans, Grant and Paulie had me sighing and then crying my eyes out when they faced tragedy.
The attraction towards beauty is so expertly dissected through the characters in this book.
How people only see the outer beautiful exterior without taking time to know the heart of a person and the impact it has on relationships is something that this book admirably illustrates through various characters in the story.
"I've often thought that beauty can be a deterrent to love,""Why?""Because sometimes we fall in love with a face and not what's behind it.""…I think…too many of us don't take the time to look beneath the lid." #BookQuote… Share on XI’ve often thought that beauty can be a deterrent to love,”
Why?”
Because sometimes we fall in love with a face and not what’s behind it.”
…I think sometimes a beautiful face is false advertising too, and too many of us don’t take the time to look beneath the lid.”

Bailey is one of the best supporting characters I have ever read:
Bailey is another cute character and one of the very best one that I have ever read about. His positive attitude towards life, his maturity, his protectiveness towards Fern, his unconditional love and loyalty to the people he thinks as his own, and his bravery and strength in the face of his disability and the cruel lows life has thrown his way are inspiring. If one can get even half the attitude that Bailey had, life would be so much better! If I have choose my favourite character from this book, Bailey would be my choice!

Splendid Emotional Play:
My heart broke for the characters in this story. They have all faced challenges, all seen hardships and haven’t surrendered their will to live. This is one book where every character has been given a story that impacts a reader differently but leaves a lasting impression.
Be it Bailey with his disability that had him totally dependent on others even for the smallest of tasks that we take for granted. or his parents who have changed all their goals, habits and even their daily routine to suit the needs and happiness of their son. Every person is fighting a battle in life and it’s just that we don’t often see it doesn’t mean that it isn’t there.
I was awed by Bailey’s parents and the loving and patient way they raised their son; never making him feel inadequate. Parents of special kids are the real heroes.

Conclusion:
A story that shocked me, broke my heart. And then gave my skeptical and bitter heart hope that something that is broken can be fixed if only we dare to fight for it. Also a book that shows the futility of war, the power of a cohesive community, the protective strength of friendship, the healing touch of love. And dares the readers to dream and take chances to realise that dream.

Final Words:
Making Faces by Amy Harmon is one of those books that not only has an enchanting story but is also narrated brilliantly. It also has a romance with a fairy tale theme that makes a permanent place in the readers hearts. Then with flawed characters who bravely take control of their life and tackle the hand of cards dealt to them, I always go back to this book whenever I am feeling low and in need of an inspiring and comforting book that makes my heart and mood soar with positivity.
