Jugnu- The Firefly by Ruchi Singh Book Review

Jugnu- The Firefly by Ruchi Singh is her latest offering and a book that takes us to the lovely hill station of Kasauli. This is the story of Zayd and Ashima. Two souls scarred by their traumatic pasts who are brought together by destiny and love.

I enjoy Ruchi Singh’s writing style and had thoroughly enjoyed her previous book, Take 2. So when she offered her latest to me to read and review, I just could not resist despite my huge load of pending books.

This book’s intriguing title is the first thing that will attract a reader’s attention. The blurb is also interesting and had me eagerly awaiting the arrival of the book.

The high and shining aspect of Jugnu (meaning Firefly) that makes it a memorable story is the expertly done characterisation. The plot felt known to me. But still, the distinctive storytelling style and the admirable way in which the author developed her characters, had me glued to my seat. I kept turning the pages eagerly until the very end.

Zayd is in Kasauli for a new start but his past mistakes follow him here too. Ashima is struggling with too many responsibilities. And a heart-shattering loss that she balances with a love powered hope. Both have faced too much tragedy and too much loss in their lives. I loved how Ashima portrayed the dutiful Indian wife, mother, and daughter-in-law who sacrifices her happiness for the sake of her family and revels in their contentment.

Things I loved:

The expert exploration of the multiple facets of love -a mother’s, a wife’s, a lover’s and a daughter’s had me tearing up and then smiling. I sat glued to my seat. And felt my heart warm up in the glory of selfless love. The beautiful way in which the author solves the mystery of the title of the book is another thing that made this book a favourite.

This book also gives place to social problems like the religious divide, societal pressure, corruption, power politics, etc. The author’s message of love conquers all is very effectively conveyed. Kudos to her for a story that makes the readers think, ponder and be inspired to make a positive change in their attitude.

I loved and enjoyed Zayd and Ashima’s characters and felt connected to them. Ashima’s son won my heart with his sweet baby antics.

The romance is expertly balanced with emotional play. I felt every change in their emotions as if they were my own.

The mystery of the title also gets solved in the story and I loved how the author connected firefly to the story.

Conclusion:

All in all, Jugnu is a stellar romance. It easily makes a place in our hearts with its fluid narration, realistic characterisation and a well-executed plot that sucks the readers in the story. The Author portrays the anguish, love, and loss of the characters realistically and justified. It had me rooting for a happily-ever-after for them.

This book became a comfort read for me and one of my top favourite romance books because of the emotions it managed to elicit out of me. I have returned to this romance numerous times and each time I finish this book, I leave with a satisfied and happy smile.

4.5 out of 5 stars to Jugnu- The Firefly by Ruchi Singh  from me and strongly recommended to everyone. Njkinny recommends this book highly and the author, Ruchi Singh to all romance lovers and book lovers looking for engaging stories. I loved this book and look forward to reading more from the author in the future.
