It is Egypt in 2000 BC, where death gives meaning to life. At the foot of a cliff lies the broken, twisted body of Nofret, concubine to a ka-priest. Young, beautiful, and venomous, most agree that it was fate–she deserved to die like a snake!

But at her father’s house on the banks of the Nile, the priest’s daughter Renisenb believes that the woman’s death is suspicious. Increasingly, she becomes convinced that the source of evil lurks within their household–and watches helplessly as the family’s passions explode in murder. . . .

A trifle, a little, the likeness of a dream, and death comes as the end.”

Quotes from Death Comes As the End by Agatha Christie

I am a big fan of Agatha Christie and love her mysteries that are always an expert mix of mind boggling mystery, a strong plot, a deep insight into human nature and so novel that even after so many decades the solution still manages to floor us!

In this book, Christie uses her experience gained on the many expeditions in the Middle East that she participated in and creates an Egypt as it was in 2000 BC. The world building is realistic and so vivid that it instantly creates an image in our minds.

The blurb is interesting and intrigues our attention. The plot is ingenious and beautifully executed. Sometimes the flow of the story is slow but the insight into the human nature that the author gives while narrating the story had me so engrossed that I didn’t mind the pace.

The characters are varied with their own set of characteristics and complexities. Seemingly innocent and even stupid people can also have hidden depths to their character is what the author expertly conveys in the story. The relationships are cordial in the beginning with even love amongst them but then when time of friction comes, these same loving people change to strangers. The main villain or the catalyst with whom the murder spree starts is called “Nofret” which reminded me of it sounding just like “Nafrat” in Hindi which means “Hatred”. This emotion suits this character and she is hated by everyone in the family except the Ka-priest who has brought her as his concubine.

The clues are revealed at planned intervals in the story and the twists and turns are well engineered keeping the readers engaged and turning pages to read more. The people in her books are never what they seem to be and this is true here too, where everyone has depths to their character no one ever expected from them!

Agatha Christie’s books are a great way to learn more about human psychology that is valid even in the present times plus the plots and mystery is so ingenious that it is sure to astound us even when times have changed and the technology taken leaps in advancement.

There is a hint of the supernatural and the effect the author created was so real that I had goosebumps reading the story!

All in all, Death Comes As The End is another gem from the Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie and a must read for all mystery lovers. 4.5 out of 5 stars to it. Go grab your copy of this book and read it!

Fear is only incomplete knowledge.”

Quotes from Death Comes As the End by Agatha Christie

The only clue to what is in people’s minds is in their behaviour.”

Quotes from Death Comes As the End by Agatha Christie

A man whose mind is evil and whose intentions are evil is concious of that fact and he knows that he must conceal it at all costs. He dare not, therefore, afford any unusual behaviour…”

Quotes from Death Comes As the End by Agatha Christie

You know that in all tombs there is always a false door? Well people are like that too. They create a false door- to deceive. If they are conscious of weakness…they make an imposing door of self-assertion…and after a time they get to believe it themselves…But behind that door…is bare rock…And so when reality comes and touches them with a feather of truth- their true self reasserts itself.”
